Our Leadership

Dr. Michael Alphonso Cousin, Sr.: Dr. Michael A. Cousin, Sr. is the fourth son born to Bishop Philip Robert Cousin, Sr. and to Dr. Margaret Joan Cousin. This native North Carolinian spent his formative years attending the public schools in Durham, North Carolina. In 1976 the family moved to Birmingham, Alabama after his father was elected and consecrated the 96th Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. As a result of this move, Dr. Cousin attended and graduated from Ensley High School in Ensley, Alabama.

In May 1980, Dr. Cousin received an academic scholarship to attend Alabama State University in Montgomery, Alabama, earning a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Political Science, with a minor in English. While attending Alabama State University, Dr. Cousin was involved in the Student Government Association, Alpha Kappa Mu National Honor Society, and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated.

In 1987, Dr. Cousin was awarded the Martin Luther King, Jr. Fellowship to attend Boston University School of Theology in Boston, Massachusetts, earning a Masters of Divinity Degree. In May 2009, Dr. Cousin earned his Doctorate of Ministry from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois.

Over the course of thirty years of pastoral ministry, Dr. Cousin has been blessed to serve nine congregations from Troy, Alabama to Detroit, Michigan. Each appointment afforded him the opportunity to serve in the Master’s vineyard. Presently, Dr. Cousin is blessed to serve as the pastor of St. Stephen AME Church in Detroit, Michigan. Since his being appointed as the pastor of St. Stephen, the church has witnessed an increase in attendance during the Sunday Morning Worship Experience! St. Stephen has once again opened its doors to its neighbors through its weekly activities.

The mark of an active church is how it is perceived within its community. Many persons who may not physically attend for worship, but are blessed to be a part of one of its various ministries have adopted St. Stephen. Each and every day, there is something going on at “The Saint!”

Dr. Cousin serves as the Chair of the Fourth Year Class on Ministry of the Board of Examiners of the Michigan Conference as well as on other conference committees.

Dr. Cousin is the parent of two sons: Michael Alphonso Cousin, Jr. and Timothy Charles Cousin.
